Why AI Deer Scoring Is Harder Than It Looks
Have you ever taken a picture of your buck and gotten a score that seemed... wrong? Maybe way too high? Or way too low?
You're not alone. And it's not broken. Let me tell you why.
The Big Question
"Why can't the computer just tell me the score?"
Great question! But here's the thing: Teaching a computer to look at a deer is really, really hard.
Think about it this way...
How Computers "See" Things
When you look at a deer, you see:
- Antlers
- Tines (the pointy parts)
- Main beams (the big curved parts)
- The spread (how wide the rack is)
When a computer looks at the same deer, it sees:
- Millions of tiny colored dots
- Light spots and dark spots
- Nothing else
The computer has no idea what a "deer" is. It doesn't know what "antlers" are. It's like trying to explain what a buck looks like to someone who has never seen ANY animal before!
Teaching the Computer Takes FOREVER
Before the computer can score even one deer, people have to teach it. And teaching takes a LONG time.
Here's what has to happen:
Step 1: Look at Thousands of Pictures
Someone has to look at thousands and thousands of deer pictures. Not just glance at them. Really STUDY them.
Step 2: Draw on Every Picture
For each picture, a person has to:
- Draw around every single tine
- Mark where each main beam goes
- Circle the points we measure
- Write down the real score
This can take 20 minutes... for JUST ONE PICTURE!
Now multiply that by 10,000 pictures. That's over 3,000 hours of work. Just to teach the computer!
Step 3: Test It Again and Again
After all that work, the computer tries to score deer on its own. And guess what? It gets stuff wrong. A lot.
So people test it. Find the mistakes. Fix them. Test again. Over and over and over.
This can take months.
Why Deer Racks Are Super Tricky
Some things are easy for computers to recognize:
- Your face (always has 2 eyes, 1 nose, 1 mouth in the same spots)
- A stop sign (always the same shape and color)
- Letters and numbers (limited options)
But deer racks? They're the opposite of easy.
Every Rack Is Different
Look at these deer. They're all 8-pointers. But they look totally different!
- Some are wide, some are narrow
- Some have long tines, some have short tines
- Some are even, some are crooked
- Some are thick, some are thin
The computer has to learn ALL of these differences.

Pictures Are Flat, But Deer Are Not
Here's a big problem: Your photo is flat. But antlers stick out in all directions.
The computer has to guess:
- How far things stick out
- How curved the beams really are
- What's hidden behind other parts
It's like trying to guess how tall a building is from a picture. Hard, right?
The Angle Changes Everything
Watch what happens when we take pictures from different spots:
Same deer. Totally different look in each picture!
- From the front: Looks super wide
- From the side: Can't see the spread at all
- From an angle: Everything looks different
This drives computers crazy!
Real Hunting Pictures Are Messy
In a perfect world, every picture would be:
- Bright and clear
- Clean background
- Deer standing still
- Perfect angle
But real hunting pictures have:
- Shadows
- Blurry parts
- Trees and grass in the way
- Weird angles
- Far away shots
The computer has to figure all this out!

How to Help the AI Help You
Good news! You can make things easier for the computer. Here's how:
Tip 1: Take More Pictures
Don't just take one picture. Take several!
Try to get:
- One from the front (shows spread)
- One from the left side (shows tines)
- One from the right side (shows the other side)
More pictures = better score!
Tip 2: Put Something Next to the Deer
This is a game-changer! Put something in the picture that we know the size of.
Good things to use:
- A soda can
- A dollar bill
- A ruler or tape measure
- Your hand
Why does this help? Now the computer knows how big everything really is!
Tip 3: Get Good Light
Dark pictures are hard for computers to see.
Try to take pictures when:
- It's not too dark
- It's not too bright
- There aren't weird shadows
- You can see everything clearly
Morning and evening light works great. Noon sun? Not so much.
Tip 4: Get Close (But Not Too Close)
Really far away? Computer can't see details. Super close? Computer can't see the whole rack.
The sweet spot: About 3-6 feet away if you can.
Tip 5: Clear Background = Happy Computer
The computer has to figure out: "What's deer? What's NOT deer?"
Make it easy!
Better backgrounds:
- Sky
- Snow
- Plain wall
- Open field
Worse backgrounds:
- Thick woods
- Spotty shadows
- Lots of branches
Tip 6: Straight Is Better Than Fancy
That cool low-angle shot might look awesome. But it makes the rack look weird to the computer.
Best bet: Take the picture at about the same height as the deer's eyes.
Be Patient - It's Getting Better!
Here's the cool part: Every time someone uses AI deer scoring, it gets a little bit smarter.
The more pictures people take (the RIGHT way), the better the computer gets at its job.
Think of it like this: The first time you tried to score a deer, you probably weren't very good. But after doing it a bunch of times? You got better!
Same with the computer. It learns.
What Should You Do?
Use AI scoring as a helper, not as the final answer.
- Take the best pictures you can (remember those tips!)
- Get the AI score
- Compare it to what YOU think
If the AI says 140 and you think it's closer to 130? You might be right! Or maybe you both learned something.
The point is: It's a tool. A really cool tool. But it's not magic.
